The rains are affecting day care pupils in Yolanda-hit areas in northern Negros Occidental, who still have no rooms for their classes, Provincial Social Welfare Officer Liane Garcia said yesterday.
“Yolanda” destroyed 12 day care centers and damaged 77 in the second district of Negros Occidental, she said.
In Cadiz City, 10 day care centers were destroyed and 67 were damaged, Manapla - 10 damaged, and Sagay City - 2 destroyed.
Day care pupils have had to go to those in neighboring areas that still have centers or to schools with classrooms to spare, she said.
Pupils from 2 1/2 and to 3-year-old go in the morning and those aged 4 and 5 go in the afternoon, she said.
Children of families who are beneficiaries of the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program are required to go to day care classes, Garcia said.
She said the repair and reconstruction of day care centers have been included in the 20 percent development fund of the province.
Gov. Alfredo Marañon Jr. has informed rehabilitation czar Panfilo Lacson that super typhoon “Yolanda” had caused P1.2 billion in damages to Negros Occidental, and is hoping to get some assistance from the national government.*CPG
