Vendors Plaza now open
BY CHRYSEE SAMILLANO

Some fish and vegetable vendors have started to occupy the Vendors Plaza and Terminal in Brgy. 12, Bacolod City.

Bacolod Mayor Monico Puentevella had said he wants the adjacent jeepney terminal in the area cleared of vendors by Wednesday and only the 25 vendors listed in the survey conducted by the Bacolod Housing Authority in December will be given priority at the Vendor’s Plaza.

Some vendors had claimed that there are 48 of them, during a meeting he conducted with the vendors associations at the Vendor’s Plaza Saturday in preparation for the transfer of fish and vegetable vendors at Bonifacio Street, who cannot be accommodated inside the Central Market.

BHA head Josephine Segundino confirmed that they had listed only 25 vendors during their survey in December and not 48.

Puentevella said this only shows that the Vendor’s Plaza is conducive to business because it is spacious that is why many want to occupy it.

He said he plans to improve the structure to make it a major attraction and also considers putting up a night market in the area to attract tourists.

City Legal Enforcement team leader Rey Demisana said they cleaned up Bonifacio Street during the weekend with the help of the Chamber Volunteer Fire Brigade after the fish vendors were transferred to the fish section of Central Market.

Demisana said those who cannot be accommodated inside the market will be transferred to the Vendor’s Plaza.

Puentevella designated Libertad Market supervisor Portia Familiaran as temporary market administrator of the Vendor’s Plaza.

He said the Vendor’s Plaza will be organized into fruit, fish and meat sections and vendors will be assigned market stalls spaces inside the area, during his meeting with them to impart the city’s policy on street and market vending.

Puentevella also plans to put up another slaughterhouse aside from the existing one in Brgy. Handumanan so the public and meat suppliers will have a choice and the prices of meat will go down.*CGS
