The “Disaster Preparedness vis a vis Climate Change Using Social Media” will be held July 10 at the Negros Oriental Convention Center in Dumaguete City, with around 60 information officers, media, and members of the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council expected to participate, a government press release said.
The training, organized by Smart Communications Inc., in cooperation with the Philippine Information Agency, will gather members of the Association of Negros Oriental Public Information Officers, Dumaguete Press and Radio Club, and the PDRRMC to beef up their capacities on emergency communications, the press release also said.
It aims to enhance the IOs' use of social and digital media in early warning and disaster communication management, and in identifying the disaster risks and appropriate mitigation.
The information officers and the media play an important role in disseminating information to the public, especially before, during and after disasters. For communications to be effective, media practitioners must have at least basic information on disaster management, Ramon Isberto of Smart said.
The training program will also tackle the use of online media for emergency communications, such as writing for the web, how to maximize social media for disaster management, cyber ethics, tips in creating infographics, and online media tools, the press release added.*
