The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, commonly called Mormons, launched yesterday the Dumaguete Stake Self-Reliance Center in a simple ceremony attended by church members and local officials.
Syril Repe of the City Hall, a church member, said that John John Gequinto, second councilor of the Dumaguete Stake, said in his opening remarks that the Center is committed to actively raise the quality of life for everyone, regardless of race or circumstance, to achieve their full potential.
Center chair Rogelio Montemayor said the facility provides career and self-employment workshops for members of the church and Dumageteños.
The center volunteers contact members, who have registered on ldsjobs.org, to help them create a profile that can be viewed by potential employers.
Volunteers also help those who are applying for loans from the Perpetual Education Fund. The Stake Self-reliance Committees identify members in need and assist them.
Mayor Manuel Sagarbarria lauded the effort of the church leaders, and said the initiative will help in the employment of its members and other sectors of the society.
He added the city government will continue to support any activity by any religious group in Dumaguete.
The inspirational message by Governor Roel Degamo was delivered by Angelo Tiongson at the launching.*JFP
