The plant manager of AVM Bernardo Engineering, that operates the Bacolod City Slaughterhouse in Brgy. Handumanan, Bacolod City informed the city government recently that their solid waste had not been collected by Enviroking since May 8.
In her letter dated May 23, to Bacolod Mayor Monico Puentevella, Glorydee Cometa, said that, previously, Enviroking had been collecting their solid waste on an irregular basis, or once a week, after follow-up calls from them.
The management of Enviroking, however, said it is the city that schedules the collection and that, based on its schedule, they are supposed to collect solid waste of the slaughterhouse every Wednesday and Saturday, she said.
Cometa pointed out that it is stipulated in Article lll Section 3 of the memorandum of agreement between AVM Bernardo and the city government, that one of the responsibilities of the city is to provide the necessary services such as health and sanitation, waste management, traffic management, the maintenance of peace and order, and enforcement of laws and regulation in the project site.
She said the Bacolod City Slaughterhouse generates 60,000 to 70,000 solid waste daily, which is usually composed of animal hair and hoofs.
“Even though we are using enzyme to lessen foul odor, the solid waste should be collected everyday by the city’s waste management contractor so it would not accumulate and the odor will not spread in the slaughterhouse premises and the surrounding community,” she said.
Puentevella said he has already ordered that the solid waste of AVM Bernardo be collected.*CGS
