PHILSURIN releases
new sugar varieties

The Philippine Sugar Research Institute Foundation Inc. has released its three new high yielding varieties that include PSR 01-105, PSR 02-247 and PSR 01-136, its press release said.

The firm’s breeding station is in Victorias City, Negros Occidental.

Of the three, PSR 01-105, proved outstanding for a national release while the two others o PSR 02-247 and PSR 01-136 - can be recommended for specific districts, the press release said.

A versatile variety, PSR 01-105 has better sugar yield compared to at least one of the check varieties from either the plant or ratoon crops in 10 out of 1 test sites, it also said.

In 24 plant trials evaluated, the new HYV has higher tonnage and sugar yield over check varieties in plant and ratoon crops, with positive advantage noted to thrive in a high water table area in the HPCo mill district.

Meanwhile, sweet cane PSR 02-247, with Louisiana female parent LCP 85-384, and PSR 01-136 could be alternative varieties in areas dominated by popular check VMC 86-550 and in five mill districts showing better sugar yield than check varieties.

Recommended mill districts for the three new PHILSURIN HYVs are (for PSR 01-105) for HPCo, VMC, Lopez, San Carlos, Capiz, Passi, Bogo, Bukidnon, Davao and Tarlac.

For PSR 02-247, mills include HPCo, Victorias and Bukidnon and selected parts of San Carlos & Lopez mill districts where the soils are sandy loams and not clay, the press release said.

PSR 01-136 – HPCo, Victorias, Bogo, Davao and Tarlac, the press release also said.*
