The 2014 Santacruzan procession was held in Dumaguete City Saturday.
City Tourism Officer Woodrow Maquiling Jr. said the festival is a revival of sorts, with the persuasion of the Church to highlight the tradition of Flores de Mayo, an age-old Marian devotion among female children who offer flowers.
Another activity in line with the festival was the Mrs. Dumaguete pageant Friday, with Sherie Mae Baena-Abestano winning the crown and the Best Speaker award, Georgete Cofino-Gomez, first runner up and “Mrs. Professionalism” awardee, and Ceres Maegarette Catacutan-Mangibin, second runner-up, and Best in Production Number.
Fishermen, meanwhile, competed in the “Birik-birik” contest on the most number of needlefish, or “balo”, caught. The fish is abundant in Dumaguete waters.*RG
