3-day school week eyed
in Yolanda-hit provinces
The Department of Education in the Central Visayas said it is considering the possibility of implementing a three-day school week in areas badly affected by super typhoon Yolanda, and in schools that are highly congested, a government press release said.
DepEd 7 director Carmelita Dulangon said the scheme will address the problem of the lack of classrooms in the region, that is composed of Negros Oriental, Cebu, Bohol and Siquijor.
She said alternative modes of teaching will be used for the scheme. The implementation will selective, and schools still have the option to share rooms with several classes, Dulangon added.

6 forest workers kidnapped MANILA – Gunmen have kidnapped six forestry surveyors in Compostela Valley Friday, the military said yesterday, the latest in a number of attacks against environmental workers there in recent years. The six were en route to study a government forestry program in a remote mountainous area of Compostela Valley in Mindanao when they were snatched, the military said. No one has claimed responsibility for the abduction, although various armed groups are known to operate in the area, including communist guerrillas and private security personnel, who work for illegal loggers and miners. |

Dumaguete santacruzan festival held The 2014 Santacruzan procession was held in Dumaguete City Saturday. City Tourism Officer Woodrow Maquiling Jr. said the festival is a revival of sorts, with the persuasion of the Church to highlight the tradition of Flores de Mayo, an age-old Marian devotion among female children who offer flowers. Another activity in line with the festival was the Mrs. Dumaguete pageant Friday, with Sherie Mae Baena-Abestano winning the crown and the Best Speaker award, Georgete Cofino-Gomez, first runner up and “Mrs. Professionalism” awardee, and Ceres Maegarette Catacutan-Mangibin, second runner-up, and Best in Production Number. |
