I can't tell my husband

Dear Tita,

I have been married to my husband, Julio, for 48 years, and I have never kept a secret from him. We trust each other completely, and I know this is the reason why our marriage has lasted this long.

We have both been working all these years and our two kids are both grown-up and have families of their own. When we both retired, we saved our retirement pay in the bank for our old age so that we would have something set aside.

A few months ago, I met a woman named Emma, who was said to be a successful businesswoman. She was such a very good talker that I was so impressed at her stories of her successes in business. When she knew that I had kept our retirement money in the bank, she told me to double my money by investing it in a very good project.

At first, I was hesitant but she convinced me to withdraw my money from the bank as the offer might not last long. I was so tempted by the big return on investment that I immediately withdrew all our savings and gave her the money.

After a few weeks, I tried to contact her to ask about my investment but her celfone wouldn't answer. I went to her apartment but was told that she was no longer living there. In panic, I inquired from the people who knew her but they didn't also know where she was. She just vanished.

Up to now, I still hadn't told my husband Julio what happened. I know he will be so angry with me for being so stupid with our money. Please advise me on what to do.

DESPERATE WIFE

Dear Desperate Wife,

You must tell your husband what has happened. It was his money, too, and he might be able to find a way to trace where your friend Emma disappeared to.

There have been so many reports of this kind of scams that I'm surprised why you didn't suspect that this might be a scam. You were so mesmerized by Emma's promise of doubling your money that you entrusted her with all your savings. Now, you find out that you were victimized.

Because this problem has become so widespread, a nationwide effort was begun several years ago to crack down on this kind of fraud. Some of the perpetrators have been caught, while others have died from serious illness. As others would say, it might have been karma.

Anyway, you have to report this to the authorities. Hopefully, Emma will be caught and your money recovered.

TITA

UNO-R holds
Barristers' Night

The School of Law of the University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos held its annual Barristers' Night 2014 at the Sugarland Hotel in Bacolod City Saturday, a press release said.

Dean Willard Riano, an author of numerous law books and a Bar reviewer, was the guest of honor and speaker during the event attended by about 140 students, Club president, Police Chief Inspector Rico Santotome Jr., said in his press release.

Riano praised UNO-R's performance in the Bar Examinations citing the eight Top 10 passers of UNO-R over the years led by Lily Uy-Valencia (1982).

"Every law student must have that homicidal intent to succeed, that mania to excel", Riano said in his message. No one flunks the Bar, one's success is only delayed sometimes, he added.

Winners of the Sportsfest 2014 and law students who took part in the 2013 Bar Operations (BarOps) in Manila spearheaded by Pulupandan Councilor Ericson Cepida were cited, the press release said.

Dean John Paolo Villasor, retired Judge Lorna Demonteverde, assistant dean of the UNO-R School of Law, and UNO-R Law professors Gilfredo Geolingo, Marvin Tañada, Andrei Norman Saril, Erwin Cabarles, Juvy Dioso and Lorebette Grandea were also present, the press release said.

Ryan Ambong and Nadine Patoy were adjudged as Mr & Miss Barristers' Night 2014. Jan Anthony Saril and his wife, Prosecutor Mercedes Odango-Saril, awarded the sash to the couple, the press release said.*

St. Louise de
Marillac feast set

St. Vincent's Home (SVH) will celebrate the feast of St. Louise de Marillac on Saturday with a Eucharistic Celebration at 10 a.m. at the SVH Chapel in Tangub, Bacolod City.

St. Louise is the foundress of the Daughters of Charity, whose mission is to serve the poor. The DCs, with the support of the Ladies of Charity (DAMAS) Bacolod Unit, have taken charge of the administration of SVH since 1963, taking care of the needy.

Most Rev. Vicente Navarra, Bishop of Bacolod, will be the main celebrant and homilist, assisted by DAMAS spiritual director, Rev. Fr. Aniceto Buenafe.

At the post–communion, all DAMAS members will make their Re-Commitment Pledge, to be followed by the reception of new members.

Sr. Ma. Asuncion Evidente, administrator of SVH, is inviting the laity to join the Vincentian Community in celebrating the feast of St. Louise.

She pointed out that it significantly coincides with the launching of Phase 2 of SVH's project for an Integrated Organic and Wellness Village.

As it has started developing organic and herbal gardens in Phase 1, SVH plans to develop a tilapia fish pond and aviary, and expand its chicken poultry and piggery in Phase 2. The whole project envisions a healthy and sustainable future for the abandoned elderly of SVH.

The St. Vincent Haven Resto is presently serving as an outlet for naturally-grown fruits, vegetables and other organic products. It also serves organic snacks and meals on weekends.*
