USLS-CEd 7th in
teacher education

The University of St. La Salle College of Education ranked seventh among 1,025 schools that offer an elementary education program, and 1,259 schools for the secondary education program nationwide by the Philippine Business for Education, a report of Rappler.com showed recently, a press release from the USLS said.

The list is the result of a five-year study that analyzed the LET passing rates of teacher education institutions in the Philippines.

The study shows that private universities and those identified as Centers of Excellence in Teacher Education dominate the top performing schools in LET, but only 10 to 12 percent of all TEIs produce good LET results, the press release said.

Meanwhile, the Class 2014 commencement exercises will be held 5 p.m. Sunday at the St. La Salle Coliseum with 99 candidates from the various degree offerings of the College of Education. A total of 1,752 Lasallian candidates will be conferred their degrees this year, the press release added.*

IN EB MAGALONA
Homegrown
priest to lead mass

Rev. Garry Escalera of Barangay Tres-Poblacion, EB Magalona, Negros Occidental, will come home to officiate at his thanksgiving mass at the St Joseph The Worker Parish Church in the town Sunday.

Escalera, who will turn 37 the day before, was ordained by Bishop Vicente Navarra at the San Sebastian Cathedral in Bacolod City on Sept. 16, 2013. He was assigned as parish priest of the Our Lady of Fatima in Barangay Granada, Bacolod, since, a press release said.

His mother, Zenia Escalera, said she had seen him saying mass in Brgy. Granada. “But saying a thanksgiving mass here in E.B. Magalona is different…something heart-breaking,” Zenia, a former school vendor, said.

Fr. Garry is the eldest of five siblings, and grew up as an ordinary boy in the poblacion. “No one knew, not even us, that he would become a priest someday. His being a priest now is a testament of our hardships, and a proof of his will to serve the Lord,” Zenia said.

“This thanksgiving mass that my son is rendering is truly worth a long wait,” she added in the press release.*
