Philsutech seminar conducted

Sixteen representatives from sugar mills and bio-energy producers in the country participated in the recent seminar on   Advance Technology on Bio-Energy and Environmental Management organized by the   Philippine Sugar Technologists Association, Inc. at the Philsutech Training Hall, Bacolod City, a press release from the firm said.

  “We need to be constantly on top of the latest technology which can increase our efficiency and improve our productivity so that our sugarcane industry will continue to be competitive even in the era of trade liberalization,” Jocelyn Sorrilla, PhilsutechVP for Bioenergy & Environmental Management Division, said in the press release.

Sorrilla gave an overview on how sugarcane is converted to alcohol and she also presented products, such as paper, bio-plastics and moulds, which comes from the sugarcane industry's “wastes”, the press release said.

DENR-Environmental Management Bureau's Environmental Management Specialist ArjunnMarven Calvo provided updates on the regulationand monitoring of sugar mills, particularly on air emission, hazardous waste and waste water, the press release said.

Florante Panganiban, the Environmental Compliance Manager of Manila Water Company who was a long-time Pollution Control   Officer of Central Azucarera Don Pedro sugar mill, presented cost-efficient ways using the latest technologies that can help sugar mills comply with the standards under the Clean Air Act, it also said.

  “We wish to thank  Di-Catalist International, Merck – Philippines and Guill-bern Corporation for their support in making this project successful, ” she added.

  As part of its continuing education for industry stakeholders, Philsutech will conduct   a seminar on Applied Technology in Cane Sugar Processing and Food Safety Management System on April 7-11 at Palmas del Mar, Bacolod City and another seminar on   Advance Technology on Energy Management & Utilization at Luxur Place on May 6-9, the press release said.
