Irene Therese Bermejo of Bacolod City displayed her taekwondo skills in the international scene after plucking the silver medal in the 10 th WTF World Juniors Taekwondo Championships held this week in Taipei City, Taiwan.
Bermejo fell short of winning the gold in Taipei Tuesday afternoon after bowing to Abigail Stones of United Kingdom, 6-7, in the sudden death round.
The Bacoleña taekwondo jin debuted in Taipei with a 9-6 win against Teeranart Khamnuan of Thailand, then followed it up with an overwhelming 16-2 victory against Rodina Mahmoud of Egypt in her second fight.
Against Mozhgan Sadmohammad of Iran, Bermejo once again prevailed, 3-1, while her fourth fight against Jin-Hee Jeon of Korea ended 7-4 in her favor.
The young champion from Trinity Christian School is no stranger to international competition. In 2012, she beat Angelica Guting of the USA junior national team in the finweight category to win the gold in the 6th World Taekwondo Culture Expo in Korea.
Competing in the A-Match Advance Division, Bermejo defeated Guting after three rounds, 3-1; 6-9; 19-15. Prior to her fight against the Amerian, she prevailed over Australian national team member Benecia Cheong, 21-5.
A bemedalled Palarong Pambansa veteran, Bermejo is one of the 11 Filipino athletes who were tapped to join a study program in the United Kingdom and given the chance to watch the London 2012 Olympics.*NAB
