6,000 kilos of garbage collected
in Dumaguete coastal clean-up

The City Environment and Natural Resources Office of Dumaguete City collected 5,010 kilos of garbage during the 44 th  International Earth Day Coastal clean-up drive held during the weekend from the coastal barangays of the city.

Program coordinator Flora Ocao of the Coastal  Resource Management said the volunteers came from 25 local and national government and city hall employees, with  nine barangays participating in the clean-up.

During the clean-up drive, the volunteer-participants collected garbage along the shoreline areas from barangay Piapi to Banilad.

Of 5,010 kilos collected garbage, 4,260 kilos was non-biodegradable and 750 kilos biodegradable trash.

OIC CENRO officer Rey Awayan said that, aside from the coastal clean-up drive, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources employees also planted mangroves in coastal areas of Barangay Banilad.

He added that the city government has been implementing Ordinance No. 88, the Comprehensive Coastal Resources Management program, to address coastal problems on dumping of solid waste along the coastlines and waterways.

One of the big contributors to the solid waste management problem of the city is the indiscriminate disposal of plastic bags and other plastics, in canals, sewer systems, and sea waters.*JFP
