Ramos dares journalists:
Fight corruption, greed

MANILA – Former President Fidel V. Ramos last night challenged representatives of community newspapers across the country to be part of a sustained national team effort against the forces of greed, complacency and corruption, and to work for the maximization of opportunities for the Filipino people.

Ramos, who was the keynote speaker at the Philippine Press Institute 2013 Civic Journalism Awards Night, held at the Traders Hotel here yesterday, said being the so-called fourth estate and the "conscience of the nation", journalists must be true to their calling.

He stressed the need for a credible press that lives by three attributes: VIA for veracity, independence and accountability.

AT PPI AWARDS

MANILA – The Visayan DAILY STAR won the Best in Business and Economic Reporting award in the daily category at the Philippine Press Institute 2013 Civic Journalism Awards, held at the Traders Hotel here last night.

The annual competition aims to recognize outstanding journalism among community newspapers across the country, PPI chairman-president Jesus Dureza said.

A trophy and cash award were received by VDS editor Carla Gomez and administrative officer Carlo Leonardia from former President Fidel Ramos, who was the keynote speaker, and Dureza.

Asian Alcohol expansion up

Negotiations are ongoing between the EB Magalona municipal government and the Asian Alcohol company, that has signified its intention to put up a factory in the coastal barangay of Gahit in the town.

Mayor David Albert Lacson said yesterday that the distillery firm is negotiating for the acquisition of 15 to 18 hectares of land in Brgy. Gahit. The project is expected to boost the economy of the town if it pushes through.

Lacson said the firm also bared plans to put up a port in the barangay. The plan for a port in neighboring Brgy. Tuburan by the Philippine Ports Authority has remained in limbo, for more than two years now..
