to retain title
Donnie “Ahas” Nietes, one of the only two reigning Filipino world champions, retained his World Boxing Organization light flyweight title via a technical knockout victory against Moises Fuentes of Mexico in their rematch Saturday night at the MOA Arena in Pasay City.
Learning so much from their first fight that ended in a majority draw in March last year, the Filipino champion decided to tire down the Mexican with an accurate combination and jabs to the head and to the body.
Nietes downed Fuentes three times in the ninth round, forcing the referee to stop the fight at 2:26, to keep the title he won against Ramon Garcia Hilares of Mexico in October 2011.
| Turkmenistan, DPR Korea The HTTU Football Club from Turkmenistan and Rimyongsu FC from Democratice People’s Republic of Korea advanced into the finals of the Asian Football Confederation President’s Cup 2014 after topping the Group B of the Qualifiers at the Panaad Park and Stadium in Bacolod City. HTTU beat host Ceres-La Salle Football Club, 2-1, both goals scored during injury time, while Rimyongsu shut out Tatung Company from Chinese Taipei, 5-0. Ceres-La Salle scored the first goal of the match in the 20th minute after Carli de Murga engaged the goalkeeper on a one-on-one and prevailed. |
| UV keeps reg’l crown University of the Visayas of Cebu beat Ateneo de Iloilo, 68-58, on Friday then turned back Bacolod Tay Tung High School, 68-54, on Saturday in Iloilo City to keep the regional basketball championship of the Coca Cola PBA Youngstars, a press release from the organizers said. The Tay Tung team settled for runner-up honors after prevailing over the Blue Eaglets of Ateneo de Iloilo, 53-42 yesterday. Coach Mark Belangel relied on the combined 28 points of Miggy Corteza and Jesmar Pedrosa and additional 12 markers from Errol Pastor for second place. |
