The winning streak for the University of St. La Salle seniors football team continues with two championships in the Ceres Cup Football Festival at the Ayala North pitch yesterday.
With veteran coach Freddie Lazarito guiding the La Salle-Bacolod booters, its Under 20 team edged University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos, 4-3, in the shootout to capture the title, while the men’s open squad beat Ceres Team A, 3-1, for the twin titles.
All three goals of the USLS Team A in the men’s open finals against Ceres A were scored by Hanesin Prince Antony, a mainstay of the Ceres-La Salle Football Club that represented the country in the recent AFC President’s Cup Group B Qualifier.
Antony, who was named Most Valuable Player in the men’s open category, was also responsible for the winning goal of the Western Visayas men’s football that allowed the region to retain the championship in the national PRISAA competition in Davao last month. He is also a member of the USLS team that won the championship in the National University Games last year.
Coach Lazarito said he was happy that both USLS teams captured the crown in their category at the Ceres Cup. He said they are training year-round in preparation for all the tournaments they are competing in.
He thanked the USLS administration for the sports scholarship given to the players and their team manager Leo Rey Yanson for the all-out support extended to the La Salle-Bacolod booters.
He said they can not afford to relax as they have several titles to defend in school-based competitions and their target is to keep on winning and remain No. 1 varsity football team in the country.
En route to the men’s open finals of the Ceres Cup yesterday, USLS Team A beat Ceres Team B, 2-1, in the shootout during the semifinals.
Meanwhile, the San Carlos Under 14 girls’ team won the championship in their category against their counterparts from Barotac.
As of press deadline, teams in other age categories are playing for the championship.*NAB
