The National Grid Corporation is strictly monitoring electricity supply in the Visayas, including that of Negros Island, with the expected power shortage in the area within the week, an official of NGCP said yesterday.
Rosette Martinez, NGCP corporate communications and public information officer for the Visayas, said there were no scheduled power interruptions for the Visayas as of 2 p.m. yesterday.
An NGCP report showed that the region may suffer at least 200 megawatts of power shortage this week.
As of 6 a.m. yesterday, the system peak for the Visayas region was at 1,569 megawatts, which is higher than its system capacity that is only pegged at 1,498 megawatts, the NGCP website showed.
The NGCP also reported that there was zero power reserve for the entire Visayas.
Martinez said that, despite of this, it did not affect the electricity supply of the region because NGCP got about 40 megawatts from the reserve electricity of Luzon to fill the shortage.
Although there are power outages in some Luzon areas, it had 815 megawatts of reserve power as of 6 a.m. yesterdayan NGCP advisory said.
The power that the Visayas got from Luzon, however, is not sufficient, as it is not in an ideal level, Martinez said.
In case power supply continues to drop in the Visayas in the coming days, NGCP and electric utility firms may ask consumers to reduce their electricity consumption, she said.*APN
