grade 9 teachers

Around 1,500 public school teachers from seven divisions of Negros Oriental and Siquijor will be in Silliman University until May 21 for the mass training of grade 9 teachers on the K to 12 Basic Education Program, a press release from SU said.

The participants come from the divisions of Bayawan, Dumaguete, Tanjay, Bais, Guihulngan, Siquijor and Negros Oriental. The training is a partnership between Silliman and the Department of Education, the press release also said.

SU is one of the first schools in the Central Visayas that have comprehensively prepared for the implementation of the K to 12 education reform. It also assisted other schools in the Visayas and Mindanao on the integration of the program, the press release said.

‘Yolanda’ affects
1M coconut trees

Super typhoon Yolanda affected 1,411,698 coconut trees in the Central Visayas when it hit the region on Nov. 8, a Philippine Coconut Authority 7 official said in a government release yesterday.

PCA 7 regional manager Dennis Andres said that, of the number, 1,233,725 coconut trees sustained slight to moderate damage, while 177,973 were categorized with severe to total damage.

Andres said the damage to coconut trees in the region resulted in a 26 percent reduction in coconut production and has affected the livelihood of 46,921 farmers.
