IN BACOLOD
Santacruzan set Sunday

The Bacolod Cultural Foundation Inc. will celebrate Flores de Mayo – the month of flowers – in honor of the Virgin Mary, with the traditional Santacruzan on Sunday, a press release from the group said.

The Santacruzan is a popular religious-historical event, and is held in Bacolod and other cities, towns and barangays in the Philippines every May. It commemorates the search for the Holy Cross by Queen Helena (Reyna Elena) and her son, the newly-converted emperor Constantine. After the Holy Cross was found in Jerusalem and brought back to Rome, there was a joyful celebration of thanksgiving, the press release also said.

The BCFI Santacruzan will start with a mass at the Bacolod San Sebastian Cathedral at 3:30 p.m., to be followed by the procession, from the Cathedral passing through San Juan, Luzuriaga, Araneta, Gonzaga, Gatuslao and Rizal streets, towards SM for the flower-laying ceremony.

The group has been organizing the Santacruzan for the past 27 years, and it has become one of the most colorful and anticipated religious May festivals in Bacolod. BCFI president Araceli Mirano is inviting the public to join the celebration, the press release also said.

The event is in association with the Bacolod City government, Negros Occidental Culture and Sports Foundation, SM Bacolod, ABS-CBN, and the Coca-Cola FEMSA Philippines, the press release added.*
