Southeast Asian Games gold medalist Arniel Ferrera of Cauayan town in Negros Occidental, dominated the men’s discus throw yesterday to snatch his second gold medal in men’s athletics of the 2014 Philippine National Games at the Philsports Arena in Pasig City.

Ferrera of Philippine Air Force A, hurled the iron disc to a distance of 40.39 meters to beat teammate Julius Felicisimo Nierras and John Albert Mantua of Jose Rizal University who took the silver and bronze medals with 39.67 and 37.76 effort, respectively.

The veteran national campaigner captured his first gold medal in hammer throw last Sunday.

Another national team member, Julius Sermona, from Himamaylan City, also delivered a gold medal for PAF Team A after ruling the senior men’s 5000m run in 14:48.22 minutes.

Meanwhile, Bryan Pacheco, a Palarong Pambansa record breaker, bagged the gold in the junior men’s javelin throw.

Representing Far Eastern University, the 5-foot-10 native of Aurora province registered best heave at 62.91 meters to beat Joshua Patalud of De La Salle-Dasmarinas who settled for silver with 57.81m throw and Rejohn Cliff Gadian of FEU who took the bronze at 52.85m.

Pacheco surpassed the new Palaro record 62.47m he set in the 2014 Palarong Pambansa held for the first time in Laguna province last May 4-10.

Sonny Wagdos of Team Titus finished second with 15:10.36 while Cesar Cataneto Jr. of Baguio Team placed third with 15:15.90 clocking.

Jessa Mangsat of Baguio won the gold medal in the senior women’s 5000m with a time of 18:34.71, beating PAF A’s Floredeliza Donos and Miscelle Gilhuena, who settled for silver and bronze medals.

In the senior women’s triple jump, Felyn Dolloso of DLSU-Dasmarinas Cavite pocketed the gold medal with 12.08m distance while Joeann Bermudo of PAF-A and Michelle Loterte of UST snatched silver and gold, respectively.

In other sports disciplines, Ishmael Abdulnaseef of Taguig bagged gold in the male artistic tungal, beating Ishmael Abdulgani of Zamboanga-B and Kurt Arthur Nietes of Iloilo City in the pencak silat competition at the Marikina Riverbanks.

In the male artistic ganda, Zamboanga-B’s Asdal Suharto and Albasher Ibnohasim stamped their class over the duo of Zamboanga-A’s Nadzkie Asmad and John Mark Coronel, while Taguig’s John Abad Alfau, Ishmael Abdulnaseef and Aluthaimin Abad ruled the male artistic regu.

In the distaff side, Irenedin Lepatan of Cebu City clinched the female artistic tungal gold, while the duo of Mutmaina Asmad and Emraida Hernandez of Zamboanga-A topped female artistic ganda.

In the kayaking events in Tanauan City in Batangas, the Philippine Navy reasserted its mastery in the 500m mixed major finals with a 1:57.07 clocking to repulse the Philippine Marines (1:58.03) and Laguna Rapids (1:58.46).

The Taytay City men’s and women’s team, on the other hand, completed a gold medal sweep in the 500m men’s and women’s major finals.

Hermie Macaranas won the canoe single men’s event with a time of 51.14, while Alvin Generalo emerged victorious in the kayak single men’s event.

Generalo and brother Alex also ruled in the kayak double men’s event with a time of 47.63, while Macaranas and teammate Ojay Fuentes bested their rivals in the canoe double men’s category with a time of 47.50.

Shiva Angela Abanilla and Maribeth Caranto, meanwhile, triumphed in the women’s touring kayak doubles with a total time of 1:34.41. *PNA
