5 Palaro standouts join USLS X

Freddie Lazarito, coach of the newly-crowned National PRISAA football champion team of the University of St. La Salle, has recruited five high school standouts who will join his multi-titled squad in SY 2014-2015.

Lazarito did his scouting and recruitment at the Palarong Pambansa early month in Sta. Cruz, Laguna, where he said he realized it’s hard to compete with big universities in Metro Manila in recruiting players.

“Sports officials of Big City teams always offer something better than what we from the province do,” he said.

DPOTFI to host 3-day golf event

At least 300 golf players from all over the country and abroad are expected to see action in the 17th Dr. Pablo O. Torre Memorial Golf Tournament set on May 23-25 at the Negros Occidental Golf and Country Club in Bacolod City, a press release from the organizers said.

Organized by the Dr. Pablo O. Torre Foundation. Inc., the golf event, themed, “Play Golf. Help Rebuild Lives”, aims to gather golf players and tap sponsors to extend their help to the less privileged Negrenses, especially those who were victims of the calamities that swept the Visayas island late last year, the press release said.

Through the tournament, DPOTFI, hopes to complement its relief operation for typhoon Yolanda victims in Panay, Northern Negros and Bantayan Island. The Foundation earlier donated paddle boats to small fishermen in these areas through its “Donate A Boat Project”.

Bill abolishing residency rule
for HS student- athletes filed

MANILA – A bill removing the residency requirement for high school student-athletes transferring to other high school or college or university has been filed in the Senate.

Senators Pia Cayetano, Cynthia Villar and Miriam Defensor-Santiago filed Senate Bill No. 2226 or an Act protecting the amateur nature of student-athletes in the Philippines by regulating the residency requirement and prohibiting the commercialization of student-athletes.

”No residency requirement shall be imposed on a high school student-athlete transferring to another high school or to a college or university,” Section 6 of the bill says.
