More support one-island region
BY GILBERT BAYORAN

More local government units in Negros Occidental aired their support to the proposed Negros island region, through the passage of resolutions by their city or municipal councils.

The Sangguniang Panlungsod of San Carlos and La Carlota, as well as Sangguniang Bayan of Manapla and Ponteveda have endorsed the creation of a new region that will be composed of the provinces of Negros Occidental and Oriental, to be known as the Negros Island Region.

They have furnished the Sangguniang Panlalawigan of Negros Occidental copies of their resolutions.

Mayor David Albert Lacson yesterday said the EB Magalona municipal council chaired by Vice Mayor Rex Depasucat also passed a similar resolution, endorsing the creation of the NIR.

Lacson, who chairs the League of Municipalities of the Philippines-Negros Occidental chapter, however, said they will soon convene to pass a similar resolution.

The proposal to create a Negros island region is now under study by the Department of Interior and Local Government, in tandem with the National Economic Development Authority.

Gov. Alfredo Marañon Jr. had said earlier that a summit of officials and stakeholders from Negros Occidental and Oriental to get a consensus that will be presented to the national government will push through.

On Tuesday Vice President Jejomar Binay described the creation of Negros Island region as a good idea.

President Benigno Aquino had also said that once DILG submits its recommendations, “I can take action on it”.*GPB
