The 2014 Visayas Regional Amateur and 1st Alex Montelibano Memorial Golf Tournament tees off today at the Bacolod Gold and Country Club in Murcia town with more than 100 golfers seeing action in the four-day competition, a press release from Murcia said.
The tournament was organized by the National Golf Association of the Philippines. Its president Carlos Coscolluela said it will have four divisions, the men’s Championship, women’s mid-amateur, and senior’s championship.
Side by side with NGAP is Murcia Mayor Andrew Montelibano, the only son of the late Alex Montelibano, who said the event is dedicated to his father who had shown a deep love for golf.
Mayor Montelibano said he is studying the possibility of establishing a sports foundation under his father’s name early next year.
“The foundation will support young golfers and nurture local sportsmen in competing internationally,” he said.
The Championship is a 72-hole stroke event for the men's Championship, 54-holes stroke play for the women's, mid-amateur, and senior's championship divisions, the press release also said.
The tournament will be played in accordance with the Rules of Golf as approved by R&A Rules Limited, USGA, and the Local Rules of Bacolod Golf & Country Club as approved by the NGAP Tournament Committee.
The Visayas leg is part of the PLDT Group National Amateur Golf Tour. This is also in partnership with the Philippine Sports Commission, Manny V. Pangilinan Sports Foundation, R&A, and the Sugar Tee Foundation, the press release said.
The awarding ceremony will be on Nov. 9, at the function hall of Planta Hotel-Bacolod, the press release added.*
