Negrense Chepe Dulay made host Bacolod Golf and Country Club proud by winning the top honors in the men’s division of the 2014 Visayas Regional Amateur Golf Tour at the Binitin layout in Murcia town yesterday.
After firing rounds of 72 and 73 in the first two days, Dulay pulled off a 69 in the third day and sealed the win with a 75 yesterday as frontrunner Rupert Zaragosa withdrew from the tournament after completing three rounds due to a prior commitment in Manila.
Zaragosa, a member of the Lyceum University golf team and a national champion, has to go home to compete in an inter-school competition, tournament co-organizer Murcia Mayor Andrew Montelibano said.
With Zaragosa leaving the field, Dulay took over the top spot to capture the championship in the men’s division, while the Gao brothers of Cebu, Weiyu and Wei Wei of Alta Vista Golf and Club Club, picked up the second and third place honors.
Weiyu topped the fourth round yesterday as he shot a 4-under 68 in addition to his 77, 75, and 74 three-day output for a 294 aggregate but it was not enough to overtake Dulay’s 5-stroke advantage at 289.
His brother 15-year-old Weiwei was a stroke behind with 295 and grabbed the third spot from Kristoffer Arevalo of Canlubang Golf and Country Club by a count back. Arevalo settled for fourth while Dulay’s teammate Nick Aleluya’s 298 was good for fifth place.
In women’s division, Yuka Saso topped the competition after completing three rounds of 79, 69, and 67 for a 215 aggregate, a stroke ahead of Sofia Chabon, who finished with 216.
Samantha Martirez and Abegail Arevalo had an identical 221 tally but the former won by count back to take the third place.
Meanwhile, champion in the division category of the 1st Alex Montelibano Memorial tournament were: (ladies division) Donna Nomo, champion (net), and Cara Golez (gross); (seniors) Andy Benedicto Sr. (net) and Richie Garcia (net); (Group C), Nonong De La Cruz (net) and Larry Muñoz (gross); (GroupB), Victor Lomenares (net) and I.I.
