Cattle congress readied

Cattle farmers of Negros Occidental met yesterday on the preparations for the conference of the Federation of Cattle Raisers Association of the Philippines next year with the province as venue.

Twenty groups of cattle raisers from the towns and cities of Murcia, Pontevedra, Isabela, San Carlos, Kabankalan and Sagay known as UCRAIN, Christy Alilain, project and development officer of the Provincial Veterinary Office, said.

The cattle farmers discussed a program of the provincial government for backyard cattle raisers through sharing of modern cattle technologies to strengthen their partnership with the commercial sector. The backyard sector makes up 93 percent of the country’s cattle industry, Alilain said.

Also discussed were the innovative ways of preparing cattle feed when pasture is out of grass, or bare. The groups were briefed on  alternative grasses for silage making and how to make use of farm by-products and wastage like cane tops to add varieties to cattle feed, she also said.*MNM
