Nietes keeps WBO belt,
surpasses Elorde’s mark

For the fifth time Donnie “Ahas” Nietes of Murcia and Bacolod City successfully defended his World Boxing Organization junior flyweight title with a 7th round technical knockout victory over Mexican Carlos Velarde Saturday night in Cebu City.
With his win, Nietes clinched the Philippine record as the longest reigning Filipino world champion, surpassing the mark set by the legendary Gabriel “Flash” Elorde.
Undefeated for the past seven years and one month, Nietes will surpass Elorde’s record of seven years and three months in January next year.

Nineteen media practitioners, five them from the Visayan DAILY STAR, were given recognition during the 1st Negros Press Club Media Excellence Awards and the Rotary Club of Bacolod East Media Lifetime Achievement Awards at the Social Hall of the Provincial Capitol building in Bacolod City Saturday.
Recipients of the NPC Media Excellence Awards were ABS-CBN Bacolod manager Leilani Salem-Alba, Visayan DAILY STAR editor Carla Gomez, ABS CBN’s news chief Harold Limbo, Mercado Publico anchorman Vicente “Vic” Mercado and Aksyon Radyo anchorman Fred Salanga.
Rotary Club of Bacolod-East Lifetime Media Achievement Awardees were Angelino “Jun” Julita, Rinaldo “Rex” Remitio, Ninfa Leonardia, Modesto Sa-onoy, Eduardo De la Fuente, Edgar Cadagat, Edmund Aspero, Ely De los Santos, Henry Doble, Henry William Streegan, Jose “Joe” Gabuat, Rolando “Rolly” Espina, Vicente “Vic” Mercado and Ruperto “Pert” Toga.
