Nietes keeps WBO belt,
surpasses Elorde’s mark

For the fifth time Donnie “Ahas” Nietes of Murcia and Bacolod City successfully defended his World Boxing Organization junior flyweight title with a 7th round technical knockout victory over Mexican Carlos Velarde Saturday night in Cebu City.

With his win, Nietes clinched the Philippine record as the longest reigning Filipino world champion, surpassing the mark set by the legendary Gabriel “Flash” Elorde.

Undefeated for the past seven years and one month, Nietes will surpass Elorde’s record of seven years and three months in January next year. moremoremore

Nineteen media practitioners, five them from the Visayan DAILY STAR, were given recognition during the 1st Negros Press Club Media Excellence Awards and the Rotary Club of Bacolod East Media Lifetime Achievement Awards at the Social Hall of the Provincial Capitol building in Bacolod City Saturday.

Recipients of the NPC Media Excellence Awards were ABS-CBN Bacolod manager Leilani Salem-Alba, Visayan DAILY STAR editor Carla Gomez, ABS CBN’s news chief Harold Limbo, Mercado Publico anchorman Vicente “Vic” Mercado and Aksyon Radyo anchorman Fred Salanga.

PNP, mayor lauded for arrest
of suspects in SU coed’s slay

Negros Oriental Police Provincial Office director, Senior Supt. Mariano Natuel Jr., commended recently the chiefs of police of Sibulan town in Negros Oriental and of Moalboal in Cebu, and Sibulan Mayor Manuel Diputado, for the speedy arrest of the suspects in the killing of a Silliman University coed recently.

Those commended were Sibulan police chief, Insp. Antonio Detuya, and Moalboal police chief, Insp. Edgar Labe. Natuel went to oversee the investigation by the Sibulan police, and commended the community for their cooperation in helping identify the suspects in the slay of Myra Abrenica Gabato, 25, a graduating Business Administration student of SU, and in tying up Melune Abrenica Gabato, younger sister of the fatality, in their apartment at Ablir Street, Barangay Poblacion, Sibulan November 6.moremoremore
