SU coed wins Miss Dumaguete
BY CECILE GENOVE

Silliman University Mass Communication sophomore student, Malka Shaver, 19, won as Miss Dumaguete in a glittering pageant held Friday night at the Negros Oriental Convention Center in Dumaguete City.

First runner-up was Menchit Marana, 23, a copy editor of a business process outsourcing company, and Kae Lena Nuique, 19, a junior Mass Communication student, also of SU, was second runner-up.

The winners were judged on performance on pageant night, 60 percent; talent, 30 percent; and special awards, 10 percent. The judging went back to zero after the top three winners were known. Their rankings were determined by the final clincher question, “If you were crowned Miss Dumaguete 2014, how will you use your title in optimizing and solidifying tourism, sports, culture, and the arts in Dumaguete?”

Shaver got the judges’ nod when she proposed the setting up of a Miss Dumaguete Foundation. She also won special awards as best in production number, best in swimwear, best in evening gown, best speaker, Miss Photogenic, Miss Professionalism, and the Darling of the Press, and was named Miss Lecit-E and Miss 2GO Travel.

Marana won the best in talent and the People’s Choice Award, garnering 3,000 “likes” on the social media. Nuique was named Miss Casino Fem.

Today is the 66th Charter Day celebration of Dumaguete City, and tomorrow, the feast of St. Catherine de Alejandria will be commemorated. The Sandurot Festival of Dumaguete was showcased in a street-dancing Saturday.*CG
