‘It’s only 7%, agri lands spared’

An increase in real property tax on urban properties in the municipalities of Negros Occidental was approved by the Sangguniang Panlalawigan on third and final reading yesterday.

The SP spared all agricultural lands from a tax hike, Board Member Salvador Escalante, SP Committee on Finance chairman, said.

The minimal increase by an average of 7 percent or about 20 centavos per square meter was not opposed by landowners at public hearings held on the ordinance, Escalante said.moremoremore

Storm signal 1 up
over south Negros

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration yesterday hoisted storm signal number one over southern Negros Occidental and Negros Oriental as tropical depression “Queenie” approached.

All sea travel in southern Negros Occidental, especially at the Pulupandan port has been halted, CPO Joemar Azuelo of the Philippine Coast Guard in Bacolod said.

Also under storm signal number one were Southern Leyte, Bohol and Southern Cebu in the Visayas; and Surigao del Norte, Siargao Island, Surigao del Sur,Agusan del Norte, Agusan del Sur, Davao del Norte, Davao Oriental, Compostella Valley, Dinagat Province, Camiguin, Misamis Oriental, Misamis Occidental, Bukidnon and Zamboanga del Norte, PAGASA said. moremoremore

American national nabbed
for child molestation raps

A septuagenarian American national, who has an outstanding felony warrant in the State of Florida, USA, for sexual battering and/or lascivious molestation of a child less than 12 years old, was arrested in Dumaguete City yesterday.

Suspect Thomas Edward Fenton, 74, temporarily residing in an apartment at Morito Road in Barangay Taclobo, Dumaguete City, was arrested by operatives of the Bureau of Immigration in Manila, and the National Bureau of Investigation Dumaguete district office, led by head agent Alvin Rebadulla.

He was arrested in the presence of his Filipina wife, who hails from Siquijor.
