The body of a woman who was carried downstream with her daughter by flashfloods during tropical depression Queenie Thursday as they were crossing a creek in Cambaye,
was recovered yesterday morning at a barangay in Tayasan, Negros Oriental.
Tayasan Mayor Susano Ruperto Jr. said the body of Hanilyn Andales, 25, was found stuck in the debris at the riverbank in Barangay Sukib, several hundred meters from her residence in Sitio Pasong, Barangay Cambaye.
A resident in Sukib who found the body called the police. Ruperto said the search continues for Andales’ daughter, Je-Ann, 5, who was with her when flashfloods swept them away.
He said the girl may have been buried under the rubble as heavy rains from Queenie caused four rivers in Tayasan to swell and overflow Thursday.
Ruperto also said he is awaiting the damage assessment report from the town’s agriculture officer on crops affected by “Queenie”.
Tayasan, Bindoy, Ayungon and other nearby towns in north Negros Oriental were the hardest hit by the storm that also brought in heavy rainfall.
Ruperto also reported damage to roads and culverts, and landslides but he could not find a prime mover to transport a bulldozer to the landslide-affected areas after a bridge in Ayungon was destroyed.
A pay loader, however was deployed there even before the storm.
Meanwhile, the Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office said that 46 barangays and 1,380 families were affected by Queenie, and 2,716 individuals evacuated in 14 evacuation centers in seven towns and three cities hit by the typhoon.
