A Chinese businessman, charged with rape by the police is now detained at the Dumaguete City police station.
The suspect, who in his mid-30s, was arrested when his stay-in house helper complained that she was forced to perform oral sex for him at his house that police sources said is considered rape under the law.
The woman, aided by the police, filed a complaint against the Chinese businessman before the Office of the City Prosecutor Tuesday and a suspect was picked up late Sunday. Prosecutor Andre Jacobo is handling the case.
Meanwhile, Supt. James Goforth, Dumaguete police chief, allayed public perception that the Chinese businessman is being given preferential treatment.
Goforth who declined to discuss the case that is being handled by the Women and Children’s Protection Desk of the Dumaguete police, said the suspect is being detained with other “offenders”.
City Legal Officer Neil Ray Lagahit also denied reports that the suspect was influential and had strong connections at City Hall.
Comments posted on the social networking site, Facebook, hinted at connections of the suspect bargaining for his release.
Lagahit debunked this saying that there are some issues with this person as he allegedly failed to get a mayor’s permit to operate a retail store in Dumaguete.
It is now up to the complainant whether she will pursue her complaint against the businessman.
The businessman’s immigration status was not immediately determined, although Lagahit said he barely spoke Cebuano, had difficulty speaking English, and knew a little of the Filipino language.*JFP
