Dumaguete Comelec notes
low SK registration turnout

BY JUANCHO GALLARDE

A reduction in the number of Sangguniang Kabataan registrants is seen in Dumaguete, with only a little more than 600 new ones being added to the previous list.

Before the 10-day registration period that ended September 29, there were 2,367 registered SK voters but more than 1,045 were deleted having reached, or reaching the age of 18 on or before the election on February 21, 2015.

There are now 1,322 in the list with ages 15 to 17 years, plus the new registrants of about 600, most of whom are from high schools in Dumaguete.  The number could be lower when hearings start.

The Character First Program of Bayawan City in Negros Oriental organized the Bayaw Anihan Pilgrimage September 30 to October 4 this year, with the arrival of sustainable transport hero Felcon Rivera in Guihulngan City.

Rivera, an artist from Bayawan City, traveled for seven months on long board from Bayawan City on March 17 to Baguio City on June 17 this year. He swam and hitched rides with fisherfolk, a press release said yesterday.

“Bayaw anihan”, also called an advocacy ride for a sustainable Negros Oriental, aims to appeal to local government units, schools, churches and organizations in the Negros Oriental for adherence to Integral Sustainable Development.

Department of Energy Secretary Carlos Jericho Petilla said Friday that the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines has completed a study on linking the grids of the Visayas and Mindanao through Surigao, and another is being conducted to connect the two island groups from Negros Oriental and Zamboanga.

The government will later have to make a quick decision so it can start constructing power plants, while the lines from the Visayas to Manila are being maintained, he added.

Petilla, who was in Negros Oriental Friday, encouraged the construction of additional geothermal plants saying it is not only good for the environment for Valencia town, or for Negros Oriental, but for the entire country.
