activities October 2-4
Thousands of students from private and public schools will join barangay volunteers from the 61 barangays of Bacolod in bayanihan activities to celebrate GK Bayanihan Week on October 2-4, Bobby Magalona, GK provincial head, said in a press release Monday.
Activities lined up include the cleanup of all four markets in Bacolod, feeding of thousands of children in the barangays, cleanup of waterways and creeks, gutter painting along Lacson Street and BS Aquino Drive, tree planting, mangrove planting and a medical mission, he said.
Civic and business groups in the city are expected to give support. Member establishments of the Hotel and Restaurant Association of Negros Occidental will donate food for the volunteers at the closing rites on October 4 where a “boodle fight” and “bayani meal” will be held for the volunteers at 21st Lacson Street, he added.
The Bacolod Negros Occidental Bakers Association, in celebration of World Bread Month, will also bake bread for the volunteers and for the feeding of children in the 61 barangays, he added in the press release.
Non-government organization BAHA has pledged to work with the barangays, in partnership with Gawad Kalinga and other civic groups, the press release also said.
The first week of October has been declared GK Bayanihan Week by the Sangguniang Panlungsod of Bacolod City, by virtue of an ordinance passed and unanimously approved by the SP on Aug. 27, 2014, the press release added.*

ATOP convention
slated in Bacolod
The Negros Occidental and Bacolod City governments will host the Association of Tourism Officers of the Philippines national convention on October 2-4, on the theme “Tourism and Development in the Community”, a press release from the Capitol said.
Delegates from all over the country will attend the opening ceremony, 6 p.m. tomorrow at the Bacolod Pavillon Convention Hotel, to be sponsored by Gov. Alfredo Marañon Jr.
Activities on Friday include an organic farm tour, culture and heritage tour, marine ecotourism tour, and nature adventure tour in the tourist attractions of Negros Occidental and the Bacolod City Night, hosted by the city, at the Bacolod Government Center at 6:30 p.m., the press release also said.
The plenary program will be held at L’Fisher Hotel with talks on “Ensuring Competitiveness and Effective Strategies in Promotions and Marketing of Community-Based Tourism Products” by Miguela Mena, dean of the University of the Philippines-Asian Institute of Tourism; “Innovative Approaches in Mainstreaming Gender and Development in the Tourism Sector” by Juline Dulnuan, director of Division of Academic Affairs of the UP-AIT; and “2015 ASEAN Visit Philippines Year: Advancing the Unique Brand of Philippine Tourism Destinations and Hospitality Experience” by Domingo Ramon Enerio III, chief operating officer of the Tourism Promotions Board, the press release also said.
Department of Tourism Secretary, Ramon Jimenez Jr., is scheduled to lead the Pearl Awards 2014 ceremony, to be hosted by the DOT Region 6 at the L’Fisher Hotel Saturday, the press release added.*

BLT feeding program gets
P820k support from LGUs
Four local government units gave an P820,000 counterpart to the Busog, Lusog, Talino school feeding program managed by the University of St. La Salle-Institute for Negros Development, in September, a press release from the USLS-IND said.
Pontevedra town and Silay City gave P324,000 each, Sipalay City - P162,000 and San Enrique town a partial counterpart of P10,000, the press release also said.
Pontevedra is in its third year of progressive implementation of the school feeding program in Burgos Elementary School, Casal-agan ES, Camingawan ES, Canroma ES, Trinidad ES, Mabini ES, M.H Del Pilar ES, Recreo ES, San Juan ES and Zamora ES.
In Silay, the program is implemented in Lantad ES, Patag ES, Violeta Integrated School, Adela ES, Don Homero ES, Don Serafin Golez IS, Mambag-id ES, Don Eustaquio Hofileña ES and La Purisima Concepcion ES, the press release said.
The BLT is in second year of implementation in Barangay 5 ES, Calat-an ES, Maricalum ES, Nabulao ES, Dungga ES, Agripino Alvarez ES, all of Sipalay City, Negros Occidental.
A total of 5,500 pupils from 122 public schools in 24 local government units in the province are enrolled in the program, and more BLT stakeholders and partners commit to help the pupils stay in school, the press release added.*

904 register for SK election
The Silay City Commission on Election recorded 904 registrants for the Sangguniang Kabataan election in the 10-day registration period, its elections officer, Maria Liza Tubera- Sy, said in a press release from the city.
The number will be added to the 2,000 existing voters for the February 21, 2015 elecion, she said.
Sy said Filipino citizens, age 15 to 17 years old on or before the date of the election, and residents for at least six months in the place where he or she intends to vote were qualified to register.
Applicants whose registrations are considered invalid, either because their registration lacks signature, thumb mark or pictures, are requested to visit the Silay Comelec office, the press release also said.
The 10-day SK registration was from September 20-29, the press release added.*
