A complaint for homicide and violation of the Philippine Dental Act of 2007 was filed yesterday against a man practicing dentistry without a license, who allegedly caused the death of a 28-year-old resident of Manapla town in Negros Occidental, by extracting five of his teeth at the same time.
The complaint was filed before the Negros Occidental Provincial Prosecutor’s Office at the Bacolod Hall of Justice against Diosdado Salas Mahilum of Barangay Punta Mesa, Manapla, for the death of Jerry Deocampo Aguirre on Aug. 19, 2014, at the rented house of his sister in Barangay 2-A, Manapla.
Violeta Aquirre, mother of the victim, said in her complaint affidavit that Mahilum, who is not a licensed dentist, extracted five of her son’s teeth at the same time on Aug. 1, 2014, causing his death 18 days later, from septic embolism secondary to dental foci.
The victim’s sister, Joena Aguirre de la Cruz, said in her affidavit that her brother told her Mahilum gave him anesthesia and used big pliers to pull out his five teeth, almost causing him to collapse from the pain.
Merlita Aguirre Banaria, an aunt of the victim, said in her affidavit that her nephew told her Mahilum pulled out five of his teeth and offered to make dentures for him.
Violeta Aguirre was accompanied by her lawyer, Reynaldo Depasucat, and members of the Philippine Dental Association-Negros Occidental chapter in filing her complaint at the prosecutor’s office.
Ann Maravilla, PDA Negros Occidental chapter president, said they were assisting the Aguirre family as part of their campaign against the illegal practice of dentistry that puts lives of patients at risk.*CPG
