Bago Mayor Ramon Torres said Saturday the Energy Development Corp. asked for an endorsement from the Bago City Government to install solar panels in Brgy. Mailum, Bago City that can generate 2 to 3 megawatts of electricity.
Torres said the panels will be placed in the area where EDC had planned to expand its geothermal plant.
Bago Vice Mayor Nicholas Yulo said the request of EDC will be endorsed to the Committee on Environment and Natural Protection and pass through the plenary at the Sangguniang Panlungsod.
Solar energy is the cleanest source of energy aside from geothermal energy, he said.
Meanwhile, Yulo said the request of Energreen Power Development and Management Inc. for favorable endorsement to put up an 18.9 MW diesel plant in a 2-hectare site in Brgy. Calumanggan. Bago City, was also passed by the SP.
Yulo said the SP members made a study and traveled to other areas with similar energy source. They saw that the community in those areas have no complaint against the operation of a diesel plant. That is why their request was endorsed, he said.
Torres said he is not against the project and all Energreen has to do is comply with all the requirements.
When they presented the project last year, some Bago officials conducted an ocular visit to other plants being operated by Energreen and saw that these are not pollutants, he said.
Torres said they assured the city that they will provide standby power during peak hours.
He said Energreen will also construct an 8 MW biomass plant in Brgy. Calumnaggan because when they came in they were already aware of the power shortage with the growth of many industries and businesses all over the province.*CGS
