The four-day 1st Chinese Schools Invitational Basketball Tournament opens today at Bacolod Tay Tung High School Po Hang Gym with the host team taking on Chiang Kai Shek College in the first game at 9 a.m. after the 8 a.m. opening ceremony.
In the second game at 10:30 a.m., Xavier School of Manila will face Hua Siiong College of Iloil, while Sun Yat Sen High School will play against Cebu Eastern College at 12 noon.
In the afternoon, Hua Siong and Chiang Kai Shek will slug it out at 5 p.m., and host BTTHS will tackle Cebu Eastern College at 6:30 p.m.. The last game of the day will be between Xavier and Sun Yat Sen.
Earlier, tournament commissioner Roger Montalbo said the tournament has gathered six teams among the top Chinese high schools in the country to play in the first national invitational tournament hosted by BTTHS as part of the scool’s 80th Anniversary celebration,
Chiang Kai Shek will be bannered by NBTC most valuable player John Vincent Gallego, while while Hwa Siong College of Iloilo has in its lineup Bacoleño cager Ralph Penuela and national junior NBA selection David Umadhay.
Expected to give the other teams a tough time are the Manila-based Xavier School and Sun Yat Sen, who are consistent contenders in the Tiong Lian Tournament in Manila. Sun Yat Sen will be mentored by 7-time NOPSSCEA college champion coach Elvis Atinado.
Cebu Eastern College, on the other hand, has produced Negrense standout Reymar Jose of Far Eastern University, while the Bacolod Tay Tung Thunderbolts is one of the top high school teams in the NOPSSCEA.*NAB
