Milk Code talk, exhibit
highlight breastfeeding
The Milk Code forum and breastfeeding exhibit, titled "Breastfeeding: A Winning Goal-for Life!" were held at the Santuario De La Salle in Bacolod City recently, with Dr. Anthony Calibo, officer in charge of the Child Health Division of the Department of Health-Family Health Office as guest speaker, a press release from the USLS said.
Calibo said the Philippines is the only Southeast Asian country that has adopted the Milk Code, that seeks to protect and promote breastfeeding and regulate breast milk supplements through proper marketing and distribution, the press release also said.
The forum was supported by the Institute for Negros Development of the University of St. La Salle, in partnership with the Bacolod Mom and Baby Club, Rotary Club of Bacolod South, and the DOH, and attended by about 400 students, teachers, nurses, doctors, social workers and mothers.
Dr. Chris Sorongon, president of the RCBS, gave the welcome remarks.
The exhibit, that aimed to unify the breastfeeding movement in Negros, with the United Nations Millennium Development Goals, capped the event, the press release also said.
Meanwhile, the USLS Alumni Relations Office is inviting the public to participate in the 8thTipon Negrosallians4 p.m. on September 27, at thelobby of Glorietta Activity Center, Palm Drive entrance, a press release said.

Sum-ag River clean-up held
The fourth river clean-up of the Sum-ag River in Bacolod City was held Thursday, as part of the monthly environmental program of Bacolod Councilor Carl Lopez, a press release from his office said.
The event started at 6 a.m., with representatives from the Environmental Management Office who conducted water testing on the quality of the river, and by the ProvincialEnvironment and Natural Resources, Coast Guard, and Bacolod City Water District, the press release said.
The river clean-up was followed by a mangrove planting in Brgy. Punta Taytay at 8 a.m., with the participation of barangay residents who planted 300 propagules, the press release added.*

USLS remembers Rafael M. Salas
The legacy of the late Rafael M. Salas, former United Nations undersecretary general, was remembered by the University of St La Salle in the first lecture series on “Leadership and Population: How the life of Salas exemplified the pursuit of these issues” at the Santuario De La Salle in Bacolod City recently, a press release from the school said.
Salas was executive director of the United Nations Population Fund from 1969 to 1987. Guest speaker Klaus Beck, UN Population Fund country representative to the Philippines, quoted Salas in his keynote speech, in saying, “Leadership is by and for the young people”.
Beck talked on leadership schemes in the forum attended by Salas’ widow, Carmelita Rodriguez-Salas, former Philippine Ambassador to the Czech Republic.
The lecture series was organized by the Institute for Negros Development of the USLS, led by director Rhoderick Samonte.
A video presentation of the life and achievements of Rafael kicked off the lecture series, the press release added.*
