Volleyball action heats up at the 3rd SJI Volleyball Friendship Cup with the St. John’s Institute High School Varsity and Batch 2010-14 cruising to their second straight victory at the Msgr. John Liu Activity Center, Saturday.
The Varsity team convincingly won against the SJI Faculty in straight sets, 25-14, 25-11, while Batch 2010-14 tamed Batch 2009 & Earlier in three sets, 20-25, 25-14, and 25-20.
Also posting a win was the Aspirants team against the SJI Mommies 25-17 25-11.
The slow starting Batch 2010-14 once again faltered in the first set but managed to recover in time to stay unbeaten in the tournament.
After taking the first set, Batch 2009 & Earlier tried to take control of the game but an error-filled reception in the second set allowed Batch 2010-14 to gain momentum with pinpoint services and net attacks to push the game to a decider.
Batch 2010-14 remained consistent with their play in the third set and was ahead 15-9 with Samantha Araneta and Isabelle Juson dishing out to Juralie Lio, Anika Uy, Kathleen Tan, Rica Bayhon and Stephanie Salazar. A back-to-back spike by Tan and a strong service from Juson padded the lead to 18-9.
Batch 2009 & Earlier put up a gallant stand with Stephanie Ong , Lizette Tamayo, Liza Calangan , Jhonna Rogacion and Katrina Lacson displaying impressive teamwork to cut the lead to 20-13.
Batch 2010-14 was on the brink of victory at 24-15 as Lio , Juson and Tan took turns with their agrressive net attacks.
But their fellow alumnae gave them some anxious moments as Michelle Ditching Soliva knocked down three service aces and scrappy plays by Jhessa Lio, Jasmine Ong, Patrice Ann Romero and Merlouine Gayondato Golez kept them within striking distance at 24-20. A service error by Soliva ended the rally.
The Varsity and Batch 2010-14 will part ways this Saturday as they battle for the top spot in the tournament.
The friendship cup is played every Saturday afternoon starting at 1:30 p.m. and is organized by the SJI Alumni Association and sponsored by the Silver Jubilarians Batch 89.*NAB
