Two senators have proposed the establishment of a state-of-the-art and highly scientific sports training center that will cater to the training and development of national athletes, saying the state of sports development has been neglected for the past year,.
Senators Juan Edgardo Angara and Paolo Benigno Aquino IV made the proposal under Senate Bill 2371 to provide a new decent and world class sports training center for the country’s 800 national athletes and 300 coaches.
”While we are requiring our national athletes to excel in competitions and bring honor to the country, they should also be adequately supported,” they said in their proposed measure.
Angara, however, said the proposed new modern sports complex will not replace the existing sports facilities including the 86-year-old Rizal Memorial Sports Complex in Manila and the 40-year-old PhilSports Arena in Pasig City.
”These will remain as sports training facilities for the national athletes and for other sports development program purposes,” Angara said.
Under the proposed bill, the Philippine Amateur Sports Training Center will be furnished with state-of-the-art training equipment, technology, facilities and modern amenities that will definitely ensure high-level training and total wellness for the Filipino athletes.
”Truly, this bill is an investment of belief and confidence in the Filipino athletes as they carry the torch for our country in international tournaments,” Angara said.
The PASTC will have athletes’ dormitory, archery range, baseball field, beach volleyball courts, BMX track, covered swimming & diving pool, football field, lawnballs and petangue field, multi-purpose gymnasium, rugby pitch, skeet and trap range, softball field, track and field oval, tennis courts, velodrome, library, recreation hall, and school, weight training and sports science buildings.
The Philippine Sports Commission, a government sports body, will be tasked to manage, operate and maintain the PASTC.
PHP 2 billion will be taken from the savings of the National Treasury for the construction of the Center and thereafter, PHP 55 million will be appropriated for its maintenance, operation and management. *PNA
