I’m suspicious of
his business partner

Dear Tita,

My husband, Fil, does not want to be an employee. He wants to be the boss, that is why he resigned from his job – he wanted to put up his own business.

Late last year, his friend Jess, arrived from Manila. He told Fil about investing in a business that could earn them a lot of money. When Fil told me about it, I had doubts as I didn’t really trust Jess, who seemed to be a smooth talker, boasting about his successes in Manila.

But Fil was so convinced by Jess that he borrowed money from his parents and his brother to invest in Jess’s business scheme. I got mad at Fil for being so gullible but he brushed me off, saying I didn’t know anything about taking risks in business. This caused our frequent spats.

After a few months, Fil told me that Jess was asking him for more money to put into their business. I grew more suspicious as I could see that the money wasn’t coming in. My salary was being used for our household expenses and the kids’ schooling as there was no income from Fil’s business. When I complained, Fil told me to be patient as they were just starting their project. What I didn’t like was that we were cutting down on our expenses, while Jess was spending money entertaining clients at restaurants and resorts. Fil wouldn’t listen to my warnings.

Recently, Fil asked me to borrow P15,000 from my uncle as they needed this amount for their overhead expenses. I refused to do so as we were now having a lot of debts to pay. This has caused a rift in our marriage. Fil says I am not a supportive wife. How can I support something that I do not believe in completely? At the rate their business is going, we might end up totally bankrupt and debt-ridden.

Please advise me on what to do.

WORRIED WIFE

Dear Worried Wife,

Your husband seems to be mesmerized by his smooth-talking friend Jess. He should learn from so many reports about business scams which have caused investors to lose their life savings, retirement benefits and pensions.

His ambition has blinded him to reality. You must keep on giving him good advice or your fears might come true. Keep him informed about reports on business scams and failures. Or you could ask your uncle to help you give Fil some good advice.

Diocese of Bacolod hosting
Negros-Siquijor clergy fest

The Diocese of Bacolod is hosting the annual Negros-Siquijor Clergy Festival that opened yesterday and ends tomorrow at the Sacred Heart Seminary Compound at Lizares Avenue, Bacolod City, a press release from the diocese said.

Attending the event are 282 diocesan priests from the dioceses of Kabankalan, San Carlos, Dumaguete, which includes the island of Siquijor, and Bacolod.

After the motorcade in the city, the participants gathered at the seminary driveway for the formal opening of the festival, with the bishops and vicar generals of the dioceses present. In his opening message, Bacolod Diocese Vicar General, Msgr. Louie Galbines, thanked the participants for their active cooperation and expressed his joy in welcoming them.

“Your presence is always a joy for the Diocese of Bacolod,” he said.

Indoor and outdoor games are lined up for the first two days of the event, and newly-appointed Filipino cardinal, Orlando Beltran Cardinal Quevedo, is the guest and resource speaker of a symposium today, the press release also said.

The festival aims to foster camaraderie and brotherhood among the clergy. For more details, those interested may contact Fr. Paolo Lanuza at 0921-3994098, the press release added.*
