Royal Paddle shuttlers join
23rd Jawad Cup tournament

Royal Paddle Table Tennis Club member Steven Gonzaga settled for first runner-up while teammate Stephen Canto salvaged the third place as both carried the banner of their club in the 23rd Jawad Cup tournament held recently in Cebu City Sports Complex.

Gonzaga bowed to Francis Bendebel of University of Cebu in the finals, 11-8, 13-11, 6-11, and 11- 9 to finish in second place while Canto lost to Steven Rosen also from University of Cebu in the semi-finals, 11-8, 9-11, 10-12, 11-3, and 12-14 to settle for third runner-up.

The two PRTTC shuttlers were among the 48 participants in the 18Under category of the tournament.

Meanwhile, Lopue’s Table Tennis Association also placed second in the team event after yielding to TATAND – A.

LOPTTA won the first singles match but TATAND prevailed in the doubles event to even the score cared. In the deciding singles match outplayed LOPTTA to capture the title.

Meanwhile. TATAND-B composed of Arnie Uy, Philip Uy and Marcus de Jesus managed to reach the quarter-finals stage but eventually bowed in a tightly contested match to Hua Ching Foundation of Cebu.

Philippine team member Glendo Nayre of Hua Ching won the first singles against Philip Uy, 11-9, 11-8, 9-11, 11-9 but the doubles tandem of Arnie Uy and de Jesus stunned the duo of Nayre and Glen Rodriguez, 11-9, 7-11, 8-11, 11-8, 13-11 to even the match at 1-1.

In the deciding singles, Hua Ching Foundation’s anchor player Jonathan Lagrosas outclassed de Jesus 11-5, 11-6, 11-9 to advance to the semi-finals. *NAB
