Island-region bill eyed,
probe on 3 ports, too

BY CARLA GOMEZ

Abang Lingkod Rep. Stephen Paduano yesterday said he is willing to file a bill in Congress for the creation of a Negros Island Region.

A presidential proclamation or an executive order for the creation of an island region will not be as permanent as if a law is passed creating it, he said.

Negros Island has a lot to gain in terms of progress by becoming an island region composed of the provinces of Negros Occidental and Oriental, he added.

Paduano said he is also eyeing an inquiry into the Philippine Ports Authority’s construction of three ports in Negros Occidental that have failed to serve their purpose.

Paduano was referring to the pouring in of funds by the PPA for the ports of Pulupandan, Himamaylan and Hinobaan, which he said are almost unserviceable.

He is asking the PPA for a report on the current status of the three ports, a post audit report by the Commission on Audit, and who the bidders for their construction were.*CPG
