A surprise inspection held yesterday at the Negros Oriental Detention and Rehabilitation Center in Dumaguete City, by a police team led by deputy provincial commander for operations, Supt. Reynold Andot, yielded assorted illegal drugs paraphernalia such as tinfoil, tooters, empty sachets of suspected shabu, and bladed weapons.

The Operation Greyhound was aimed at flushing out contraband items from the prison cells of the provincial jail.

After the inspection, Gov. Roel Degamo ordered the demolition of structures, called kubols, inside the jail. He said he had received reports that the “kubols” were being used by guards and trusted detainees of the provincial jail, and detainees with health problems.

Dumaguete Bishop Julito Cortes called on 80 diocesan priests and 20 others from religious congregations Tuesday to continue serving with ardor, never giving up even in the most trying times and to be a light to others.

The bishop addressed the group who renewed their priestly vows during the Chrism Mass on Holy Tuesday at the St. Catherine of Alexandria Cathedral in Dumaguete City.

“I would like to ask you not only to remain faithful to your vocation as priests, but also to be joyful priests who ‘infect' others with their gladness, with their enthusiasm, with their zeal for the Lord's house,” Cortes, 58, said.
