Iloilo holds sports summit

The Iloilo provincial government spearheaded the holding of the 1st sports summit yesterday with the hope of winning more gold medals in both local and national sports competitions and even in the Olympics.

Iloilo Gov. Arthur Defensor Sr., in his message at the sports summit held at the Sarabia Manor Hotel, said that he finds it strange for a first class province never holding a sports summit before in order to come out with a sports development program.

He said that, despite having no sports development program, the province has also been known before for sports because of the athletes accomplishments. However, with the sports summit attended by the mayors, school administrators and other sports enthusiasts, the provincial government was optimistic that it could produce more athletes who will excel and win gold medals in competitions.

”The Philippines has still to win one gold medal in the Olympics,” Defensor said. He hopes that the much coveted gold medal could be achieved from the Iloilo athletes.

Meanwhile, Iloilo Vice Gov. Raul Tupas said that, through the sports summit, a roadmap was charted for the next three years in honing good athletes. “This will give hope to athletes,” the vice governor said.

He said sports also builds character, unites communities and forged lifelong friendships among athletes.

A ceremonial signing of a Sports Covenant was also held by attendees in the summit.*PNA
