We have been ushered into the celebration of the most holy days of the year by the striking image of the Lord riding a donkey as he enters Jerusalem. Amidst waving palm branches and blaring shouts, Jesus comes in, bringing with him an expressive and ardent message of peace. This unassuming act of the gentle and humble Jesus riding an unimpressive donkey reminds us too, that only in the stance of humility can we bring about the peace that we all clamor for today.
Additionally, such humility becomes the overarching tone of the whole Passion story of the Lord. This consistent humble disposition of Jesus creates a clear contrast with the spiteful pride of his accusers, so much so that in this, we shall again witness the tragedy of human arrogance, which only brings about in consequence enmity, death and destruction, while at the same time learn how the way of loving humility finally vanquishes the malice of conceited smugness and evil pride.
Peace and humility always go together in such a manner that the latter becomes the condition for the former. In a word, it is humility that sets the stage for peace. In the end let us be reminded that as Jesus hangs upon the cross, out from his humble heart came the words of peace which says: “Father, forgive them for they know not what they do.” (Lk. 23:34)
May the Easter mysteries I pray lead us to be transformed into that image of Christ who humbled himself, obediently accepting even death on the cross, so that we too in the end may be exalted with him (c.f. Phil. 2:8-9), who lives and reigns forever and ever.
A Blessed Easter to all.*
