Bacoleñas capture gold, 2 silver medals
in ASEAN Taekwondo Championships

Thirteen-year-old Shaira Isabel Garbanzos prevailed over her Vietnamese rival in the final round to capture the gold medal in the 51 kgs. Cadet division of the 12 th ASEAN Taekwondo Federation Championships 2015 held in Ho Chi Minh City.

Garbanzos, an incoming Grade 8 student from University of St. La Salle, was one of the three taekwondo jins from the Negros Taekwondo Union, who were tapped to join the national team and represent the country in the tournament.

With her were Irene Therese Bermejo and Camille Andrea Miraflores, who bagged the silver medal in their respective events to help the Philippine Team secure a first runner-up finish behind host Vietnam in the competition.

Bermejo, a former student of Trinity Christian School in Bacolod City, and presently a member of the Ateneo de Manila University taekwondo varsity team, missed the gold medal aby a point against her opponent from the host country.

Miraflores, also from USLS-IS, added another silver medal to the haul of the Philippine team with her second place finish in the 41kgs. category of the Cadet division.

All three Bacoleñas are still in Manila for training in preparation for the Asian Junior Taekwondo Championships 2015 scheduled in Taipei on April 12 t0 18.

At the ASEAN tournament, the Philippine team bagged 21 gold medals, 26 silvers, an 9 bronzes while Vietnam topped the tournament with 46 gold, 29 silver, and 19 bronze medals. Malaysia ranked third with 5 gold, 9 silver and 18 bronze medals.

Joining the tournament were 337 athletes from Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Myanmar, Laos, Singapore, East Timor and host Vietnam.*NAB
