DOLE temporarily stops
construction of building

The Department of Labor and Employment has issued a temporary work stoppage order against the construction of a three-storey building in Brgy. Pahanocoy, Bacolod City Wednesday.

Inspection conducted by a team of DOLE engineers Tuesday showed that the construction workers did not have harnesses and other safety gear, Cyril Ticao, DOLE Region 6 Assistant Director for Negros Occidental, said.

Ticao said that when they passed by the construction site they saw in plain view workers who did not have harnesses. They are meeting with the building contractor today on the matter.

The DOLE, however, withheld the name of the construction site.

He said they will lift the order only when the contractors have complied with the requirements set by DOLE for the health and safety of the workers.

Last month, DOLE also issued a work stoppage order against the construction of 888 Chinatown Squaremall Phase II project at Gonzaga Street, also for non-compliance with workers' health and safety rules.

However, the order was lifted after the contractor purchased the required safety gear.

Ticao said they are wondering how these construction projects were given permits by the Office of the Building Official of Bacolod without construction safety health program certificate from DOLE.

They are also monitoring other construction sites in Negros Occidental to check on similar offenses.*APN
