Priest starts prayer
walk for environment

Fr. Loreto Dacanay, a missionary who worked with the indigenous people in the communities along the Amazon River in Brazil for 15 years and is now assigned at the Recoletos de Bacolod, started his "Prayer Walk for our Environment" yesterday.

“My intention for this walk is for the environment. Our environment is one of the visible proofs of God's existence". he said of his 87-kilometer stretch walk from Bacolod to San Carlos City.

The walk is also a manifestation of his support for the ongoing protest of environmental advocates against the plan of the Energy Development Corporation for an exploration project within the North Negros Natural Park, he said.

Echoing the words of Bacolod Bishop Vicente Navarra, Dacanay said, “We reiterate our firm stand against defilement of any kind to Mother Nature and therefore strongly protest EDC's Energy Exploration in NNNP.”

Dacanay said that, as he walks, he is offering other prayer intentions for Filipino missionaries in difficult territories ravaged by war, poverty and hunger. He will be stopping by community chapels for rest and prayers, Dacanay said.

The walk also anticipates the release of the Encyclical on Ecology of Pope Francis in June or July this year, he said.

“It is our God-given duty to protect and safeguard our environment, the Northern Negros Natural Park is our last hope in the island that has in it our natural heritage filled with forest life in the abundance of birds, animals and plants; let us not allow greedy companies and families to take this God-given gift from us. We support this Prayer Walk for the Environment of our Rekoleto brother. We offer him our prayers,” a statement from the Commission on Social and Ecological Concerns-Recoletos said yesterday.*

Summer art workshop
April 13-24

A summer art workshop for elementary and high school students who would like to enhance their skills in visual drawings and painting will be held April 13-24 at the LCC School of Architecture and Fine Arts Building at San Juan Street in Bacolod City, a press release from organizers said.

In the workshop conducted annually by artist Tony Tejado since 1981, exercises in the elements of arts like line, form, shape, texture and colors are required from participants to help them express their thoughts for visual presentation. Tejado said he believes that skills are better expressed if one has the right grasp and control of the medium before transferring them to canvas or paper, the press release also said.

Classes will be from 8-10 a.m., Monday to Friday, with a remaining hour to finish the plates and exercises. For inquiries, those interested may contact the LCC Arfien Department Office, at Sta. Monica Building, at 434-9661 local 441 for more information, the press release added.*
