KABANKALAN CITY – Local Government Secretary Mar Roxas yesterday said he is hopeful that the creation of a Negros Island Region will take place within the year, while Negros Occidental. Gov. Alfredo Marañon Jr. said he is 101 percent sure it will happen.

President Benigno Aquino needs to issue an executive order for the creation of the NIR composed of Negros Occidental that is currently part of the Western Visayas region, and Negros Oriental, that is part of Central Visayas, that Roxas has favorably endorsed to him.

“Let's give the president the greatest latitude to think about it. The pluses are very clear and well established. There are no minuses since there will be no big cost for the creation of the NIR,” Roxas said..moremoremore

The president is finally coming?

Gov. Alfredo Marañon Jr. yesterday said he was informed by the Presidential Management Staff that President Benigno Aquino is arriving in Bacolod City on April 30.

The president has been expected since late last year to inaugurate the provincial government's Negros First CyberCentre (NFC) in Bacolod City.

During his visit on April 30, Aquino will inaugurate the NFC, Marañon said, but he has yet to be briefed by the PMS on the rest of the itinerary of the president.moremoremore

Degamo ‘not closing doors'
on Negros island proposal

“We are not closing our doors to the possibility of a one island, one region. But, not at this moment”, Negros Oriental Gov. Roel Degamo said yesterday as he again explained his stand on the need for further consultation with the people of Negros Oriental.

He said there are specific matters to be thoroughly discussed to ensure that the people in Negros Oriental will not be “dehado (disadvantaged).”

Degamo and Secretary Mar Roxas of the Department of Interior and Local Government spent at least an hour in a closed door meeting in Dumaguete City on the proposed Negros Island Region..moremoremore
