3-year NIR transition pushed
BY JUDY F. PARTLOW

Businessmen in Negros Oriental supporting the proposed Negros Island Region said they want a transition period first instead of government spending P40 billion to set up a regional center.

Ed Du, president of the Negros Oriental Chamber of Commerce and Industry, said during a forum Tuesday in Dumaguete City with Secretary Mar Roxas of the Department of Interior and Local Government that a transition period of perhaps three years will allow the two Negros provinces time to adjust to the new regional structure.

Roxas has endorsed the Negros Island Region proposal to President Benigno Aquino III but he had visited Dumaguete City for another public consultation before proceeding to Kabankalan, Negros Occidental, to inspect the proposed site for the regional offices.

Mayor, vice mayor at
odds with each other?
BY JUANCHO GALLARDE

Is trouble brewing between the executive and the legislative branches in Valencia town, Negros Oriental?

Mayor Edgar Teves has confirmed that had directed Vice Mayor Marciano Maravillas to vacate his office so it can be used as Office of the Municipal Treasurer.

The order was allegedly issued because of the mayor's observation that it was not being used by the vice mayor whose office is supposed to be at the Sangguniang Bayan and not in the municipal hall.

PPCRV SAYS
No instructions yet
on ‘One Good Vote'
BY JUDY F. PARTLOW

The Parish Pastoral Council for Responsible Voting of the Diocese of Dumaguete has not yet received instructions from its national headquarters on its latest campaign, “One Good Vote”, to reform the way people vote.

The church-based election watchdog launched the campaign at the national level recently, to curb vote-buying through the voters' education approach.

PPCRV national chair Henrietta de Villa explained that this is different from other programs of PPCRV, and targets specific communities where vote-buying is perceived to be rampant.
