Bishops slam execution
BY ADRIAN NEMES III
Bacolod Bishop Vicente Navarra and San Carlos Bishop Gerardo Alminaza yesterday condemned the planned execution of Overseas Filipino Worker Mary Jane Veloso in Indonesia.
At the same time, they said that what happened to Veloso should serve as a wake-up call for the government to look into the plight of OFWs who are also on death row in other countries.
Alminaza, who offered a personal prayer for Veloso and her family, said it is high time for other nations that continue to practice the death penalty as their capital punishment, to stop it.

Negros Island bid ‘sealed'
in meeting of 2 governors
BY JUANCHO GALLARDE
The much-talked about union of the two provinces of Negros was considered sealed by observers after a one-on-one and heart-to-heart talk between Negros Oriental Gov. Roel Degamo and Negros Occidental Gov. Alfredo Marañon Jr. at the Capitol in Dumaguete City yesterday.
Marañon visited Degamo to personally invite him to come to Bacolod City tomorrow, to be among the guests with President Benigno Aquino III during the inauguration of the Negros First CyberCentre in Bacolod City, and the rice processing center in Bago City.
The free-flowing talks were witnessed by media as both leaders wanted a transparent negotiation on matters that affect their constituencies. Among those discussed were the sharing of financial resources, establishment of regional offices, and the chairmanship of the Regional Development Council.
